Forest Facts
Public concern over the future of Oregon's forests and wood products industry has never been greater. |
| In Hampton Affiliates' ongoing effort to educate the public on the important environmental and economic issues in the timber industry, we have provided the following excerpts from Legacy and Promise: Oregon's Forests and Wood Products Industry. This industry report, commissioned by the Oregon Business Council and the Oregon Forest Resources Institute, looks at the past, present and future of Oregon's forests. |
| |
- The wood products industry accounts for about one-fourth of Oregon's economic base, and is expected to remain a significant part of the state's economy.
- Properly managed, Oregon timberlands could support a sustainable annual harvest of at least 5 billion board feet with much less environmental impact than occurred in the past.
- Oregon forests are...vigorously producing not only raw material needed to supply the wood products industry and a broad range of wildlife habitat, but also the scenery and recreational opportunities valued by tourists, as well as people and businesses looking to put down roots in Oregon.
- Oregon has been and is a laboratory for the development of new forest management concepts.
