A positive way for all small woodland owners to promote these same values is to join the American Tree Farm System.
Background The Tree Farm System was launched in 1941 by the nation's wood using industries. Forest Industries have continued as major sponsors of the System ever since. Over more than five decades the program has grown into America's largest volunteer forest conservation effort involving foresters from all branches of the profession, landowners of many backgrounds and all segments of the forestry community. Many forestry organizations, public agencies, consulting foresters, and others add their expertise and involvement to the System.
The American Tree Farm System is sponsored and administered by the American Forest Foundation, a 501(C)(3) non-profit foundation. The System is financially supported by contributions from the forest industry, tree farmers and others.
Certification Certification of Tree Farmers under the oversight of the American Forest Foundation (AFF) is a third party verification process in the United States which recognizes the practice of excellent forestry on private forest lands. This recognition is intended to raise the visibility of the practitioners in their respective communities and inspire and motivate other surrounding non-managing forest landowners to practice sustainable forestry. Hampton has been a member since 1950 and involved in small woodland certification for 25 years.
