Our Forests
We pride ourselves on being good forest stewards and good neighbors.
Sustainable Forests
Science-based Management.
At Hampton Lumber, we approach forest management with an unwavering commitment to sustainability. Our practices are rooted in responsible forestry, preserving and nurturing healthy forests for future generations. Through science-based timberland management, we strive to maintain the delicate balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility, ensuring that our forests thrive for years to come.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Third-Party Certification
The goal of sustainable forestry is to combine the continuous growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality and a wide range of other conservation goals. Our forest practices are certified through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) in the U.S. and Canada. We practice a forest stewardship ethic that includes high standards to protect water quality, biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat, and species at risk.
Forest Recreation
Public & Permitted Access
Our forests aren’t just about lumber—they’re about life. Beyond serving as a vital resource for lumber production, our forestlands provide abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoyment. From hiking to hunting, there’s something for everyone to explore and appreciate.
Habitat Enhancement
Working with Nature.
As timberland managers, we’re always looking for ways to enhance habitat through the course of our operations. This might include placing large woody debris in streams to enhance fish habitat or constructing and maintaining biodens during harvest operations.
Our Pollinator Enhancement Project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing habitat and forage for native bees on our lands by strategically sowing native wildflower seeds in recently harvested areas. Pollinators play a critical role in our ecosystem, facilitating the pollination of plants and ensuring food production for various species, including humans.
Hampton Family Forests
Our approach to community and forest stewardship
Our approach to forest management showcases our values and our commitment to the communities in which we operate.
Like other forestland owners in the Pacific Northwest, we manage our forests under some of the most advanced and protective forest practice laws in the world. All of our forests are also certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). However, the ways in which we manage our lands and support and enhance the environmental, social and economic benefits our forest provide are certainly unique, influenced by the Hampton family and our long history in the region.
In addition to providing jobs and much needed building materials, our forest support public recreational access, habitat enhancement opportunities, and a venue for the occasional artistic event.
This past year was shaped by steady work, shared responsibility, and the people who show up every day across forests, mills, and communities.
Proud of what we accomplished together- and looking ahead to another great year.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, we’re reflecting on the people and partnerships that make sustainable forestry possible.
Our work spans long timelines—planning, regeneration, harvest, milling, and supporting the communities around our operations.
None of it happens without the crews in the forest and at the mills, the truck drivers on the road, and the educators and community organizations who help strengthen rural towns across the region.
Thank you for the role you play in this shared landscape.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday.

Road upgrades for the win! Through Oregon`s Forest Road Inventory Assessments, we`re replacing old culverts with flood-resilient designs, like this one at our Big Creek Forest. These changes ensure better fish passage and natural water flow, supporting salmon runs and healthy watersheds. Small steps, big impact!

The before-and-after magic speaks for itself! Where once there were exposed, eroding shores, now you’ll find robust logs strategically placed in the landscape, offering safe havens for our coastal aquatic life. This collaboration, highlighted by projects like 2021`s Upper Big Creek Floodplain Restoration showcase how our partnership with organizations like the North Coast Watersheds Association (NCWA) nurtures both working forests and the vibrant wildlife that depend on them. We`re proud to support NCWA`s mission of building a brighter future for Oregon`s waters.

Foresters rely on a variety of tools to better understand and manage the forest, and one of the most important is the compass clinometer, pictured here. This versatile instrument helps foresters find direction, measure slope, and even estimate tree height—all critical information when mapping timber stands, planning harvests, or studying forest health. Paired with other essentials like increment borers, diameter tapes, and data loggers, the compass clinometer allows foresters to make precise measurements without cutting down trees, ensuring decisions are rooted in accuracy and sustainability.

We recently teamed up with the Pacific Education Institute to host teachers for a two-day forest education workshop in Skagit County, WA!
During the workshop, we toured Hampton-managed forestlands in Skagit County, including two recently replanted sites, a buffer zone, and a thriving 40-year-old stand. Teachers heard directly from Hampton foresters and DNR experts on topics like wildfire resilience, forest practices regulations, and sustainable management strategies.
Thanks to our partnership with PEI, participating teachers earned STEM clock hours. We’re proud to support educators with hands-on learning opportunities and resources that help bring forestry and environmental science to life for local students.
